They hold moisture in the soil of hanging baskets and containers, so plants do not dry out as quickly, improving displays and growth even in dry conditions.
Adds Potassium - Not Sodium
Another advantage of Rain-Gel and Rain-Mats is that they slowly release small traces of potassium, unlike other products that release sodium (salt) which can adversely affect some plants.
Place these mats down in the growing medium at root level as you plant each basket, hayrack or planter. These mats soak up water as rapidly as Rain-Gel (granules)but provide a stable reservoir which the roots will actually grow into. Prepackaged Rain-Mats are designed to take the guesswork out of how much material to use. They fit nicely into standard size hanging baskets. They can reduce the need for watering as often.

Rain Mat
Worked very well with geraniums in hanging baskets for the top level soil, about 1/3 down. But probably did not reach roots after they grew deeper Will buy again.

I wouldn't plant a hanging basket without first placing a "rain-mat" in it. I've been using them for years with great results.

Performed as described. Important during this dryer than normal summer in Northern Maine.

Rain gel mats
I used these mats in my hanging baskets this year and they did help keep the soil from drying as rapidly as it used to. Much better success with hanging baskets this year having used the mats.

These worked just as advertised. The water doesn’t drain out of the coir liner like it had been doing. Allows me to go several days without watering.

Finally help in keeping my Hayrack from drying out
My old hayrack system finally needed complete refilling. Nobody carried the exact size for the new liner except Kinsman. I had the benefit of being able to also add the rain mats and the terrracotta hydrowine watering tubes as I made completely new plantings. Finally I have a way to keep my plantings watered while I am away.

There are 2 very good things about these mats: 1) they catch the water so it doesn't run out and 2) they keep the soil moist
