I was so hopeful...
I had a choice of two deer/rabbit repellents from Kinsman Company. After reading the reviews I decided to try the better smelling deer repellent. It arrived and I coated my hydrangea with the spray. It was planted several years ago outside my deer fence, so dosing it with deer repellent is a regular occurrence. The first thing I noticed is that it did not last the first time I applied it, so I made a mental note to ignore the frequency info on the bottle and spray it weekly. I re-coated the plant yesterday and overnight half my large hydrangea was eaten, the flowers and the leaves. I do not know if Grandpa's works in other areas of the country, but it did not deter deer munching in northern California. We have a lot of deer here, but usually it is only the baby deer who munch until they learn to ignore the plants with deer repellent. My hydrangea has never been eaten this much in all the years it has been in the ground, so my final opinion is that it does not deter deer, the babies or their mothers. I really liked the idea of not having to spray the nasty smelling stuff, but it is much more effective so I will return to the smelly deer repellent. Not sure if Grandpa's deer repellent works to repel rabbits, but they are not a problem in my garden so I do not know if it is effective against rabbits.
