Hayrack Planter and Liner Sets

Hayrack Planter and Liner Sets

Hayracks were used inside barns in England years ago, so livestock could help themselves to hay. Old hayracks became treasured antiques and came to be used outside windows as attractive planters for flowers. Unlike traditional wooden window boxes, hayracks can be used easily on walls or deck railings anywhere. Plus we now offer Expandable Hayracks that fit together to make a beautiful wall-mounted flower bed of any length. Kinsman offers a wide range of sizes - from 24" to 55" long. All are deep and generously proportioned so plants will flourish. Hand welded from study steel bars, Kinsman's Hayracks are coated in black plastic and have replaceable coco-fiber liners. They look good year-round, with changing displays of spring and summer flowers, then greens, berries and seasonal decorations during winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hayrack Planters

  • What size hayrack planter do I need for my railing or wall?

Kinsman offers Euro Classic Hayracks in five sizes: 24", 30", 36", 44", and 55" long. The larger sizes are deeper and wider, so they hold more soil and support bigger displays. We also carry Round Euro Classic Hayracks in 22" and 30" lengths, which have a deeper, more rounded profile that works especially well under windows. For walls and railings over 6 feet long, our 80" Expandable Hayrack (two 40" halves) can be extended with additional 40" middle sections to fit any length. Measure your space and choose the closest size that fits without overhanging.

  • Do hayrack planters come with a liner?

Yes. Every Kinsman hayrack planter and liner set includes a natural coco-fiber liner made from coconut fiber. Both the original steel baskets and their coco-fiber liners are made in India. Coco-fiber liners provide excellent drainage and air circulation for healthy root growth, and they retain moisture to reduce the need for frequent watering. The liners are preformed with natural latex so they fit right into the planter. When it is time to replace a liner (typically every 2 to 4 seasons), we sell replacement coco-fiber liners and molded liners in every size, sourced from Sri Lanka and India.

  • How do I mount a hayrack planter?

Kinsman hayrack planters are designed to be wall-mounted, but mounting hardware is sold separately so you can choose the best option for your surface. We offer Cable Tie Kits, J Hooks (for hayracks up to 36"), Large J Hooks, and Hayrack Brackets. You can also use plated or masonry lag bolts from your local hardware store. For vinyl siding, our Vinyl Siding Hooks support up to 24 lbs. The larger 80" Expandable Hayracks are heavy and should be installed by a professional for safety.

  • What plants grow best in hayrack planters?

Hayrack planters are ideal for trailing and cascading plants that spill over the edges, including trailing petunias, lobelia, ivy, sweet potato vine, and nasturtiums. Upright plants like geraniums, marigolds, and herbs work well in the center. For shaded locations, ferns, impatiens, and begonias are excellent choices. Because hayracks have good drainage through the coco-fiber liner, they suit plants that prefer not to sit in wet soil. Plant performance can vary by climate and light conditions. If you are not sure what grows best in your area, we recommend consulting your local garden center. For moisture retention, Rain Gel granules or the Rain Mat are well suited for use in hayrack planters.

  • What is the difference between a hayrack planter and a window box?

The key difference is the profile. Hayrack planters have a curved front with horizontal bars that cradle and hold the coco-fiber liner in place, giving them their signature open, basket-like look. Window boxes have straight sides both in front and along the sides, for a more structured, rectangular appearance. Kinsman's Pamela Crawford Window Box Planters are part of the broader Pamela Crawford side-planting container line and share that straight-sided profile. Hayracks typically offer excellent drainage and airflow through the coco-fiber liner, while the straight-sided window box shape works especially well along railings or beneath windows where a more uniform look is desired.

  • How long do Kinsman hayrack planters last?

Kinsman hayracks are hand-welded from sturdy steel bars and thickly dipped in black plastic for permanent corrosion protection. With proper care, the steel frame will last for decades. Many customers report using the same hayracks for 10 to 20+ years. The coco-fiber liners typically last 2 to 4 seasons depending on your climate and sun exposure, and replacement liners are available in every size so you can refresh your planter without replacing the frame.
