Excellent shovel. A great value for the price. Keep in mind that this is a gardening shovel, not a construction shovel. I will definitely recommend it.

Sadly, it misses the advertised mark. I toured at least half dozen local stores, from the big boxes to the local mom and pops I prefer. They all pretty much carried one of three sub-par and shorter shovels. I'm six foot six in my work boots and wanted more length and quality. This Spear and Jackson shovel was advertised at 62 inches but with my tape measure it reads 58 inches from tip of the blade to the top of the handle, perhaps they are counting the curve and get those extra 4 inches that way?. Oh well I thought, still longer than the local stores carry. Then I picked it up and made a shovel movement in the air and the head of the shovel wiggled. So, I get to figure out how to fix my brand-new shovel a day before I am supposed to clear 2 acres of brush. Does no-one make a quality product anymore for the working class blue collar?

I own a Spear and Jackson shovel purchased in 1961. My background is agriculture so I feel qualified to evaluate shovels having spent many hours with one in my hands. After searching every hardware and big box store and coming away dissatisfied with the shovels they offered I searched on line and was happy to see Spear and Jackson were still in business. Kinsman had one of the shovels I had looked at and at a very reasonable price. Looks and feels like a shovel is supposed to. Hope it lasts as long as my "old favorite".
